Film Reviews

Cinema is a form of technology unlike any other, possessing a quality unrivalled by different media outlets. A visit to the cinema is one of my favourite forms of escapism. This style of digital media is constantly enhancing with the recent ‘buzz’ about 3D. I have already seen many of the big titles showing in cinemas this month including 127 Hours, The King’s Speech and Black Swan. In this section I will review recently seen films, rate them, and give you the low down of new, popular movies.

Black Swan ****   Director Darren Aronofsky

Starring: Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel

A thrilling psycho-melodrama about a young ballerina cracking under the pressure after being awarded the lead role in the production of Swan Lake.

One word, intense! First appearing as a pure white swan, the film follows Nina ( Natalie Portman) develop in character, slowly loosing her mind and innocence as she takes on apposing traits of the evil black swan. The film is explicit and graphic, a movie about dancing that is enjoyable for both male and female viewing.

The King's Speech ***** Director Tom Hooper

Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter

The king’s speech is an epically moving and heartfelt film about King George VI overcoming his stammer that has plagued his reign making him a private laughingstock and his speeches painful to watch. He enlists the help of an un-orthodox speech therapist as a last resort. Their relationship blossoms throughout this beautiful film as his speaking ability improve till he can give an awe-inspiring and heart-stirring speech successfully guiding his country through the great war.

Chalet Girl *** Director Phil Traill

Starring Felicity Jones, Ed Westwick, Bill Nighy and Bill Bailey

An uplifting British comedy about a girl called Kim, who quit skateboarding after an accident that killed her mother. In order to support her father, Kim accepts an opportunity to work at a ski chalet in the Alps for a highly privileged family although at first she doesn't quite fit in. Everything changes for Kim when she learns to snowboard and an unexpected gentleman comes into her life. This Rom-Com will not disappoint.

Fast and Furious 5 *** Director Justin Lin

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez

The newest franchise of the fast and the furious series is a high octane heist film. Set in Rio it encapsulates tyre screeching chase scenes and intense fight scenes with the brave racer, Vin Diesel, and the genius cop, Dwayne Johnson, throwing their gargantuan arms at each other yet drawing no blood keeping the fight scenes as family friendly as possible. With help from the “favourites” from the past four films it sticks to the same sort of aesthetic as the previous ones with a spruce up from the “Rock”, as he was formerly known, it is a hard hitting picture but you can’t help but feel how long the franchise can carry on for.
